Pop quiz:
You’re driving on the highway, approaching the off-ramp that leads to your destination. But the cars in front of you are going 2.95 mph. Do you:
A) Change lanes and try to speed up enough to pass them and get back into your lane so you don’t miss the turnoff, and, in doing so, risk having to drive another 20 miles to get to the next one and then double back through the city traffic to get to where you were going?
or
B) Stay in your lane, grind your teeth as you curse both them and their mamas for their stupidly slow driving, and ensure that you’re in the right place at the right time to access that exit ramp?
Now imagine that highway is the path that leads to your manifestation, and those slow drivers are all the harsh realities you’ll be forced to deal with on the way to achieving that dream – the years of studying you need to put in to obtain that college degree, the miles of red tape you have to navigate to start that business, or the deep soul-searching required to recognize where your boundaries need to be reinforced in future relationships.
I’ll be honest with y’all: I’ve missed that off-ramp more times than I have fingers and toes to count, all because I was in so much of a hurry to get where I was going that I tried to speed past the parts of the journey I didn’t like, and in doing so ended up doubling the time it took me to get there.

Manifesting something almost always feels tedious, an undertaking that requires more time and effort than we anticipated, that sends our anxiety into overdrive as we wonder whether we’re even doing it right or simply wasting our time. So, we do what comes naturally to all human beings: We try to find ways to minimize the amount of labor we need to expend while simultaneously seeking ways to expedite the desired outcome. In other words, we look for a shortcut.
However, despite the 2,000,000 Youtube videos and IG reels which claim you can manifest any desire in under 5 minutes, changing your reality requires a little more time and effort than simply saying “I’m going to win the lottery today”, or “I’m going to find my soulmate tomorrow”.
The truth is, there are no shortcuts to changing your reality.
You can’t simply speed past those slow drivers because you’re eager to get where you’re going.
You have to be willing to sit through the tedious parts of the journey to ensure that you’re in position to take the turnoff to your destination, whether that means doing the difficult shadow work involved in shifting your identity or learning everything there is to know about home decor so you can open your own interior design business.
More often than not, when people say they ‘failed’ at manifesting their dreams, it’s because they lost sight of those dreams – they allowed themselves to be distracted by the swirling shitstorms of chaos which Life occasionally sends our way, or they allowed doubts and fears to creep in and stall their forward momentum. And this is where manifestation practices like journaling and affirmations can be extremely beneficial, because they help us to remain focused on the end goal as we attempt to wade through whatever muck we’re currently sloshing around in.
